The impact of the GDPR
Over one year after the entry of the GDPR into force, on 24 July 2019 the European Commission published a report looking at the positive impact of the EU data protection rules and how they can be improved further.
According to the report, most Member States have set up their necessary legal frameworks, and the new system strengthening the enforcement of the data protection rules has been established. Businesses are developing a compliance culture, while citizens are becoming more aware of their data protection rights.
While the GDPR has achieved many of its objectives, the European Commission set out ambitious targets for the future; such as (i) ensuring that all Member States comply with the EU data protection rules; (ii) strengthening the role of data protection authorities; (iii) supporting and involving stakeholders from civil society and business and making sure that individuals and businesses can enjoy the benefits brought by the GDPR; (iv) integrating data protection into all relevant policies and (v) promoting international convergence towards a high level of data protection rules across the globe.
